Cle de Peau R9 (Comtesse de Cayla) Extra Rich Lipstick

Cle de Peau R9 (Comtesse de Cayla) Extra Rich Lipstick ($60.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a light-medium coral with a hint of pink and soft rose micro-shimmer. Guerlain Jicky is sheerer and a bit darker, less coral. MAC Mellowarm is a darker, browner version. Chanel Chalys is a bit more orange and darker. Chanel Libertine is similar. Lancome Stylista is slightly pinker. MAC Razzledazzler is pinker. Burberry Devon Sunset is pretty close, creamier rather than shimmery. MAC So Vain is a touch pinker and lighter.

The texture of Comtesse de Cayla is soft, creamy, and very lightweight–for such a creamy consistency, it’s surprisingly light on the lips. There’s opaque color payoff with a single pass of the lipstick, which is easily applied as it glides on like softened butter. The shimmer is very fine, so it doesn’t look frosted or metallic on the lips–it is a more forgiving finish and texture on lips with more lines, dryness, and the like.  When I tested this shade for wear, it wore for five hours and lost some of the glossiness in the natural finish after three and a half.  It was in need of a full reapplication after six and a half hours.

Cle de Peau advertises that there are “skincare benefits” in the formula, and while I can’t attest to that, given that I cannot commit to a single formula for six weeks to trial it, I can weigh-in on the short-term benefits like de-emphasis of lip lines (softened after ten to fifteen minutes of wear) and intense hydration. There are a lot of lipsticks that keep lips hydrated while you wear them to the point where your lips are no worse for the wear after they’ve faded, but there are fewer formulas that leave your lips feeling more hydrated than they were when you first applied the product.

One of the more frequent questions I’ll receive from readers whenever I post about a luxury product is, “Is it worth it?” The answer is really going to depend on you: your preferences, budget, and how much you love what you already have. My answer is always yes and no; yes, it’s absolutely worth it if it’s going to be a shade that you reach for, wear, and love every time you apply it, but no, not if you buy it and never wear it. I just repurchased Cle de Peau’s #2 Lipgloss (my all-time favorite gloss color), which is beautiful and lovely in every way, suits my coloring, and is one of the few glosses I’ll wear alone. What I can tell you is that the Extra Rich formula is fantastic–you are, at the very least, getting a high quality product.

Cle de Peau R9 (Comtesse de Cayla) Extra Rich Lipstick Review, Photos, Swatches

A
It's every bit a luxury product--it feels lightweight, silky soft, and applies beautifully with rich color payoff, flattering undertones across skin tones, and is one of the most hydrating formulas on the market. Whether it's worth it is part of each individual's justification/rationalization process, but I can at least tell you that you're getting a high quality product.

Cle de Peau #2 Lipgloss Review, Photos, Swatches

One question I regularly receive about products (and not just luxury priced products) is, “Is it worth it?” This is also iterated in other ways, like: 1) “Do I need this?” 2) “Should I save up for this?” and 3) “Should I buy the original or the cheaper dupe?” Sometimes someone will want to be convinced to buy something, other times someone will want to be reminded that it’s totally dupeable or below-the-bar in quality. The problem with these questions is it’s really, really hard for me to tell you if a product is worth it to you or not. It’s undeniably subjective and completely based upon your budget and personal preferences!

I thought maybe it would be a good reference post going forward whenever I review a more expensive product, because “worth” and “value” are measured differently by each of us. Some of us prefer to look at how much you’re getting for the price, others look purely at the price tag because they never expect to go through a product, and others look at price per use (because you expect to use it up). I’m more in the camp of the last one–if you are only going to wear a product once or twice before moving onto something else, there’s absolutely no reason to save up for it. If you’re going to use it everyday for months, then maybe it’s worth saving up for.

From time to time, I re-review one of my all-time favorite products (and thankfully, it’s permanent!) that I continue to love each and every time I wear as much as I did the first time (and I’m often motivated to do a more thorough job reviewing the product each time and with better photos!). There are a few reasons why I love it, but they’re all personal reasons and justifications. I just re-purchased it from Saks a week or so ago.

Cle de Peau #2 Lipgloss ($48.00 for 0.21 fl. oz.) is a peach and gold shimmered peach-pink with a nearly metallic finish. It’s semi-opaque in coverage–there is a lot of shimmer in it, while the base color itself is fairly close to my natural lip color (warmer and pinker). Le Metier de Beaute Papaya Creme is the closest dupe to this shade, and it has a slightly darker color base (less pink, a little more coral), but it has a very similar shimmer component that gives off the same metallic-like finish. MAC Nymphette is sheerer, more golden (less peach), and doesn’t have nearly as much shimmer–but it is a gorgeous shade and similarly flattering. Benefit I’m With the Band is pinker, less peach, almost gold-copper in shimmer. Chanel Pin-Up is similar but has less shimmer. NARS Orgasm is also similar but lacks the heavy shimmer finish. NP Set Mauritius is milkier and a little less peach.

First and foremost, I’m absolutely in love with the color. It’s warm, peach, and gold; all shades that flatter my particular skin tone and overall coloring. It’s not sheer, but it’s not totally opaque, so it can be layered with other lipsticks but also wore on its own (I usually wear it on its own). There are, however, as you can see from above, numerous shades that are similar to this one–and for most, I suspect, similar enough to opt for a version that’s half or even a third of the price of this one. The only thing that really makes it slightly different is how much shimmer is in the gloss, and the resulting more metallic-like finish (which Papaya Creme also has but the base color is a wee different, though not by much–and still $12 cheaper).

The texture is lightweight and comfortable to wear without being too thin or too thick; it doesn’t slip around once applied, but it doesn’t cling. It’s non-sticky, and there was no discernible scent or taste. I love that it wears five to six hours on me, and it fades evenly and none of the shimmer (and there’s a lot of it!) travels while it’s worn. The formula is moisturizing and never leaves my lips feeling dehydrated, even after wearing it all day.  It’s not my favorite gloss formula of all time, but it’s a really good one (though I haven’t tried many other shades beyond #2–I can’t even remember trying another shade on).  If it was a poorly made gloss with a stellar color, I would probably end up moving to a dupe with a better formula and only keep my original tube as nostalgia.

I imagine part of the love for this particular gloss is attached to memories; my first luxury cosmetic purchase, which was part souvenir (at my first Barney’s, which was in Vegas) and part reward, and one of those products that has endured over time. It doesn’t matter if others think it’s a waste of money or hate the color or don’t think it’s worth that much–my enjoyment is not dependent on others loving it.  Every time I apply this gloss, I smile. My spirits rise.  I get a little giddy.  I remember the very moment I swatched this and saw the crazy peach-gold duochrome and fell in love and indulged.

One thing that you’ll notice is I’m careful about saying what is and isn’t my favorite. There are lots of products I like and even love, but there are less products I consider true favorites–ones I go back to, ones I would repurchase, ones that I would use over and over again if I was a normal consumer.  So when I say something is my favorite, I say it with feeling.

There are a handful of lip products that I always reach for when I travel, this being one of them (others include Chanel Dragon–my power red–and a Guerlain Rouge G, which usually fluctuates between Garconne, Gems, and Ginny at the moment). This also has a permanent home in my purse (along with Jack Black Lip Balm), and if I don’t have a product I’m testing along with me and the product I was originally testing has worn off, I reach for this.

Is there a beauty product that holds a special place in your heart?

The Million Dollar "Is it worth it?" Question

A-
It's my favorite gloss for a few reasons, and it's a good gloss overall--it's not the best gloss formula of all time. What sold me originally was the color, and what keeps me sold is the total package plus the back story and the "meaning" of the gloss to me. There are several dupes worth considering at a more wallet-friendly price, though!

Cle de Peau T9 Extra Rich Lipstick
Cle de Peau T9 Extra Rich Lipstick

Cle de Peau T9 Extra Rich Lipstick

Cle de Peau Albertine (T9) Extra Rich Lipstick ($60.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a soft pink-tinged peach with a fine golden peach micro-shimmer. MAC Delectable is darker, more orange. MAC To the Future is very similar but doesn’t have the shimmer. MAC Fashion City is more orange. Chanel Santal is very comparable.

Albertine delivers mostly opaque color, but there’s a little hint of translucency. It applies evenly and smoothly, and the formula itself has a fair amount of slip but isn’t too thick, despite the creaminess of the texture. It’s lightweight and comfortable to wear, and this particular shade wore for four and a half hours, which wasn’t particularly long but longer than average for shades of this lightness. This is a very wearable shade, and it is a bit more dupeable and less nuanced compared to some of the other colors available in the Extra Rich formula. I like it, and I am personally drawn to peaches and corals as go-to shades, so it is a color I’d wear often.

Top 10 of 2012: Lipsticks

There were actually a lot of fantastic lipsticks released this year! I already pulled up twenty that to consider for the top ten, and I had only reached August (I go backwards). There were 52 pages of lip product reviews to sift through (that’s 312 posts!), and these were the ones that made the cut:

Cle de Peau’s Concealer Review, Photos, Swatches

Cle de Peau Concealer
Cle de Peau Concealer

Cle de Peau Concealer ($70.00 for 0.17 oz.) is available in four shades and comes in a twist-up stick. I’m reviewing the Ocher shade, which is the shade that I’ve been using for a long while now (seriously, the photos were originally taken last summer). It was my pick for best high-end concealer in the most recent Editor’s Choice Awards.

Cle de Peau’s Concealer is definitely a cult favorite, and for many, worth the splurge–but it is breathtakingly expensive for many. (And there are definitely readers who are not impressed by it.) I’m not dedicated to concealer, as I’m usually too lazy about it and find foundation covers enough for my needs on a day-to-day basis, but when I do reach for concealer, it is most often for this (even when I find others that I love). This has a creamy consistency that goes on evenly and smoothly, remains blendable long enough to smooth it over the skin but doesn’t settle into fine lines while you wait for it to dry down. It sets shortly after, and then it lasts eight to ten hours on me without settling into my fine lines or creasing. It has buildable coverage from medium to full, so you can apply as much (or as little) as needed for a particular spot or area. It works well for my under eye circles and darkness by softening the lines underneath my eye as well as brightening and concealing the darkness.

The one advantage this has is that it’s very portable, and the other is that it looks good on bare skin without foundation as a companion. Sometimes when I have a blemish or healing blemish but don’t plan on wearing foundation, I can dab this on quickly, blend with my fingertip, and I’m good to go. It’s also great for touching-up faded foundation on long days out and about (this was a go-to when we were in Vegas and would be out all day). I can get dry around my eyes, and this helps keep them looking less dry (overall) and never emphasizes their dryness.

I would say I use this about once or twice a week with two to three dabs for each application, and I’m not even half-way through my tube. I think that if one were to use this on a more regular basis, you would still see it last a few months. I hadn’t slept well (about two hours a night) for three nights in a row this past week, so I was like, “This would be an excellent moment to really test and photograph under-eye concealers!” which motivated to finally review this product. Few products live up to their hype, but Cle de Peau’s Concealer absolutely did. It is a product I would (re)purchase, but don’t tell Mellan I spent $70 bones on it or else he’ll have a fit!

Cle de Peau #119 and #121 Satin Eye Colors Reviews, Photos, Swatches

Cle de Peau #119 Satin Eye Color
Cle de Peau #119 Satin Eye Color

Cle de Peau Satin Eye Color ($45.00 for 0.07 oz.) is supposed to be a long-wearing eyeshadow with “brilliant, sumptuous color” that yields a smooth application. Earlier this year, there were three new and limited shades released, and I tested two of them. For incredibly finely-milled, velvety textures, Cle de Peau knocks these out of the park. I was able to use these both wet and dry, though the results did not drastically differ between the two. Both shades wore well without creasing over an eight-hour period, but I saw some light fading after seven and a half hours of wear.

#119 Satin Eye Color ($45.00 for 0.07 oz.) is described as a “shimmering pearlescence [that] creates a dewy, luminous glow.” It’s a pale, light golden beige with a soft, frosted finish and pale gold sparkle. It had semi-opaque color coverage–noticeably color but not intensely pigmented. It worked well as a highlighter or an all-over shade to brighten lids. I can see that some readers may prefer the lit-from-within quality of the color and finish, which may be more important than the pigmentation. Too Faced Jingle All the Way Eyeshadow #2 (LE) is lighter. NARS Jezebel (P) is almost peachy in comparison. Kat Von D Galore (LE) is more frosted, lighter. Disney by Sephora Scuttle (LE) is similar. MAC Femme-Fi (LE, $15.00) is also similar. L’Oreal Iced Latte (P, $7.99) is not as warm-toned. See comparison swatches.

#121 Satin Eye Color ($45.00 for 0.07 oz.) is described as a “deeply rich luster [that] creates a discerning elegance.” It’s a warm-toned, coppery brown with a soft, pearly sheen. It had good color applied wet or dry, though th elatter application gave it a more intense, smoother result. Makeup Geek Vegas Lights (P, $6.99) is more frosted but very similar in color. Sleek MakeUP Sunset #9 (P, $9.99) is a smidgen warmer/brighter. Marc Jacobs Beauty The Starlet #4 (P) is more frosted. Guerlain Cuivre Ora (LE, $35.00) is also a bit more frosted. NARS California (P, $24.00) is redder. MAC Star Myth (LE, $15.00) is a touch redder. MAC Brash (LE, $15.00) is brighter. See comparison swatches.

Clè de Peau Gold (12) Luminizing Face Enhancer
Clè de Peau Gold (12) Luminizing Face Enhancer

Clè de Peau Gold (12) Luminizing Face Enhancer ($55.00 for 0.35 oz.) is a pale, yellow gold with a luminous sheen. Tarte Champagne (LE) is lighter. Divergent Gleaming Pearl (LE) is more iridescent. Becca Moonstone (P, $38.00) is lighter. theBalm Mary Lou-manizer (P, $24.00) is darker. NARS Albatross (P, $29.00) is lighter. Chanel Routes des Indes de Chanel Illuminating Powder (LE, $80.00) is darker. bareMinerals The Shining Moment (LE, $26.00) is darker, warmer. Bobbi Brown Gold (LE, $39.00) is slightly darker. Bobbi Brown Party (LE, $42.00) is a touch darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

This is the other shade that I purchased with Sand Beige (13). There’s not a lot of information about the product, other than it’s a highlighting powder that “illuminate[s] your complexion.” (Sometimes straightforward is nice!) I bought both of mine as just pans, but you can purchase it in Clè de Peau’s compact for $95 (you can see it here). I have mine in a Z-palette, and since it is a metal pan, it stays in place nicely. Gold (12) has the same soft, finely-milled, silky texture as the previous shade, but it was just a tiny bit powdery in comparison. It had good color payoff, which you could apply lightly or more heavily depending on how intense you want the golden sheen to be. It blends and sheers out easily, and it doesn’t accumulate, so it doesn’t emphasize pores even when applied more heavily. This shade lasted for eight hours before fading slightly on me.

Clé de Peau Pastel (11) Luminizing Face Enhancer
Clé de Peau Pastel (11) Luminizing Face Enhancer

Clé de Peau Pastel (11) Luminizing Face Enhancer ($55.00 for 0.35 oz.) is a cool-toned, white with a golden micro-shimmer/sheen that has a very luminous, glowing finish. NARS Albatross (P, $29.00) has a stronger yellow/golden sheen. Chanel Lumiere Sculptee de Chanel Highlighting Powder (LE, $72.00) is less shimmery. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

After about 0.5 seconds of consideration, I ended up buying the other two shades of Luminizing Face Enhancer, which both looked cooler-toned online. The reality is while it appears very cool-toned in the pan with pale blue and lavender bits, it is more white-based but still has a warmer, golden sheen. It’s not nearly as warm as the other two shades I reviewed before, though, and it should work well on very fair skin tones without adding noticeable color. The texture of the powder is silky, finely-milled, and very easy to apply and blend out. It’s very pigmented–you don’t need much and even my softest brushes had no problem grabbing a good amount of product, so I’d opt for a lighter hand and build up to the desired intensity. It’s glowing and luminous without emphasizing pores, but it’s a noticeable sheen. On me, it lasted for eight and a half hours.

Clé de Peau Delicate Pink (14) Luminizing Face Enhancer
Clé de Peau Delicate Pink (14) Luminizing Face Enhancer

Clé de Peau Delicate Pink (14) Luminizing Face Enhancer ($55.00 for 0.35 oz.) is a pale, pink-tinged beige with a warm, golden champagne shimmer. Cle de Peau Pastel (11) (P, $55.00) is cooler-toned, less shimmery. Urban Decay Highlighter (P) is warmer. NARS Devotee (LE, $29.00) is warmer. Chanel Poudre Signee de Chanel Illuminating Powder (LE, $68.00) is slightly warmer. Chanel Beiges Ombres Tissees (LE, $75.00) is darker, pinker, more shimmery. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

This shade seemed to be the most shimmery out of the four variations available, though it still applied with a soft, noticeable glowing sheen–luminous but not metallic or glittery on the skin, so it didn’t emphasize pores for me. The powder has a soft, finely-milled, silky texture that sits well on skin and is easily blended/sheered out, though it is fairly pigmented. It’s forgiving, so it doesn’t feel like you have to be careful when applying it, but you don’t need a lot to get a luminous sheen. On me, this highlighter lasted well for eight and a half hours before fading slightly.

Cle de Peau Stellar Gaze (307) Eyeshadow Quad Review, Photos, Swatches

Clé de Peau Stellar Gaze (307) Eyeshadow Quad
Clé de Peau Stellar Gaze (307) Eyeshadow Quad

Clé de Peau Stellar Gaze (307) Eyeshadow Quad ($55.00 for 0.21 oz.) is a set of four, warm-toned autumnal shades that range from gold to plum. The texture of the eyeshadows is soft, velvety, lightly creamy and silky, while being incredibly blendable. They feel smooth to the touch, and the finishes are particularly flattering on the eyelid–think a luminous, glowy highlighter that adds life but doesn’t accentuate pores–this is in the same vein, just for the eyes. All four shades lasted for eight and a half hours, and the first three shades had really nice color payoff, but the last–the plum–shade was a little less pigmented. Overall, it’s a nice quad, though the shades are more dupable than not, so it may not be particularly interesting to some unless it’s a go-to combination.

Each of the eyeshadow quads is available as a “refill” so it is just the set of eyeshadows, and you can purchase the case (here) for $25, which comes with two dual-ended sponge-tipped applicators. I put all of my eyeshadow quads into a Z-palette (see a photo of it here), but I do have two cases from the two eyeshadow quads I received as samples (I bought six quads, which is a statement on how enamored I was after trying two), so you’ll see it in the post for those interested in purchasing the two together.

Stellar Gaze #1 is a slightly muted, medium yellow gold with a soft, frosted finish and warm undertones. It had good color payoff with a silky, smooth texture that was easy to apply and blended out beautifully on the skin. This shade wore well for eight hours on me. Dior Trafalgar #4 (P) is cooler-toned. Milani Bella Sand (02) (P, $3.99) is more shimmery. bareMinerals Golden Coast (LE) is less shimmery. Makeup Geek Bleached Blonde (P, $5.99) is slightly darker. Sleek MakeUP Meet in Madrid (LE, $9.99) is more shimmery. Urban Decay Strike (LE, $18.00) is darker, cooler-toned. MAC Barefoot (LE, $15.00) is similar. Chanel Harmonie du Soir #1 (LE) is darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Stellar Gaze #2 is a medium-dark, gold-shimmered brown with warm undertones and a frosted finish. It had great pigmentation that went on evenly and was easy to work with. The consistency was soft, finely-milled, and buttery to the touch. This shade wore well for eight and a half hours before fading on me. Tarte Keepsake Frame (LE) is lighter. Make Up For Ever ME644 Iced Brown (P, $21.00) is more metallic. Make Up For Ever D640 Golden Snake (P, $21.00) is darker, cooler-toned. YSL Fetiche #1 (LE) is less shimmery, warmer. theBalm #10 (P, $6.50) is similar. MAC Golden Hours #1 (LE, $21.00) is warmer. Urban Decay Radar (LE, $18.00) is more metallic. Too Faced Gangsta (LE, $16.00) is warmer. Edward Bess Cosmic Bliss #4 (P, $30.00) is darker. Urban Decay Snakebite (LE, $18.00) is similar. Urban Decay Smog (P, $18.00) is warmer. MAC Museum Bronze (P, $21.00) is more shimmery. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Stellar Gaze #3 is a brightened, medium-dark copper with hints of brown and a frosted sheen. It had full color coverage with a blendable, soft, buttery texture that made application a breeze. The eyeshadow stayed on well for eight hours before fading slightly.
Ardency Inn Copper (P, $21.00) is more shimmery, darker. MAC Amberluxe #3 (P) is lighter. Marc Jacobs Beauty The Siren #3 (LE) is similar. Kat Von D Dog Roses (LE) is warmer. Tarina Tarantino Wonderful #3 (P) is more shimmery. Tarina Tarantino Amber (P) is similar. NARS Isolde #1 (P, $24.00) is less shimmery. MAC Retrospeck #2 (LE, $15.00) is more shimmery. bareMinerals Hoopla (LE) is similar. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Stellar Gaze #4 is a medium-dark, warm-toned plum with a pearly sheen. It had good color payoff, and the texture was soft and smooth, though a smidgen powdery compared to the other shades. This shade wore well for eight hours before it started to fade. Tarte Fingerpaint Art (LE) is darker. Tarina Tarantino Fantastical #1 (P) is more shimmery, lighter. Disney by Sephora Carpet (LE) is lighter. Disney by Sephora Ursula (LE) is less shimmery. MAC Swelter (LE, $15.00) is lighter. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Clé de Peau Cosmic Aura (308) Eyeshadow Quad
Clé de Peau Cosmic Aura (308) Eyeshadow Quad

Clé de Peau Cosmic Aura (308) Eyeshadow Quad ($55.00 for 0.21 oz.) is a set of four shades that run cooler-toned with a purple bent. I knew I had to see just how well (or poorly) the brand could do purples, as this is a color range that many brands under-deliver on. Unfortunately, this quad did fall short: two of the purple-hued shades were slightly powdery in texture as well as weaker in pigment. This is a more unique set of shades, relative to Stellar Gaze (307) that I reviewed earlier, though the second shade is one that a few brands do.

Each of the eyeshadow quads is available as a “refill” so it is just the set of eyeshadows, and you can purchase the case (here) for $25, which comes with two dual-ended sponge-tipped applicators. I put all of my eyeshadow quads into a Z-palette (see a photo of it here), but I do have two cases from the two eyeshadow quads I received as samples (I bought the other six quads myself, which is a statement on how enamored I was after trying two), so you’ll see it in the post for those interested in purchasing the two together.

Cosmic Aura #1 is a dark, slightly cool-toned purple with a violet shimmer-sheen. It had semi-opaque color coverage, but it wasn’t fully pigmented, and the texture was slightly powdery. This made it harder to get the same intense color payoff on the lid in practice. This shade lasted for seven and a half hours on me. Disney by Sephora Sea Witch (LE) is less shimmery. MAC Warm & Smoky (LE, $15.00) is very similar. MAC Banafsaji (LE, $15.00) is bluer. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Cosmic Aura #2 is a dirty, cool-toned beige with hints of green and an iridescent pink-to-green shimmer finish. The duochrome is subtle, though. The texture was slightly powdery, and it had had mostly opaque color coverage. The eyeshadow stayed on well for eight hours before fading. theBalm Sandbar (LE, $16.00) is slightly warmer. Make Up For Ever I542 Pink Ivory (P, $21.00) is warmer. Makeup Geek Rockstar (P, $5.99) is similar. bareMinerals Iridescent Iris (LE, $14.00) is darker. Make Up For Ever #940 Star Powder (P, $20.00) is similar. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Cosmic Aura #3 is a muted, medium-dark eggplant purple with subtle, warm brown undertones and gold and plum shimmer. It had fairly good pigmentation, and the texture was soft, buttery, and smooth. The color lasted for eight hours applied to the eye before fading. Ardency Inn Disco (P, $21.00) is more shimmery. Chanel Tisse Camelia #4 (P) is darker. Too Faced Rhinestone (P, $16.00) is similar. Giorgio Armani #16 (P, $32.00) is darker. Too Faced Candied Violet (P, $16.00) is less shimmery. Too Faced Bluff (LE, $16.00) is cooler-toned, more shimmery. Dior Constellation (864) #5 (LE) is warmer. Clinique Lavish Lilac (P, $17.00) is a cream product. Urban Decay Rapture (LE, $18.00) is darker. Urban Decay Rockstar (P, $18.00) is darker. MAC Winterized (LE, $21.00) is similar. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Cosmic Aura #4 is a muted, navy blue with hints of purple and navy micro-shimmer for a satin finish. It had decent color payoff, but I wish it had been as intense as it looked in the pan. theBalm Pipeline (LE, $16.00) is lighter, bluer. Dior Atlantique #3 (LE) is less shimmery. Too Faced De La Mer (P, $16.00) is darker. Givenchy Bleu Soie (4) (P, $23.00) is a cream product. theBalm #5 (P, $6.50) is slightly darker. Chanel Apparition (LE, $36.00) is a cream product. Too Faced Badass (LE, $16.00) is purpler. Tom Ford Beauty Cobalt Rush #2 (P) is similar. Le Metier de Beaute Sapphire (LE, $30.00) is brighter. Urban Decay Half Truth (LE, $18.00) is slightly purpler. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Cle de Peau Stardust (302) Eyeshadow Quad Review, Photos, Swatches

Cle de Peau Stardust (302) Eyeshadow Quad
Cle de Peau Stardust (302) Eyeshadow Quad

Cle de Peau Stardust (302) Eyeshadow Quad ($55.00 for 0.21 oz.) includes shades of beige, warm green, brown, and murky green. Cle de Peau’ sells their eyeshadows as refills (which is just a plastic pan with the four shades), and you can elect to purchase a plastic compact to put them in for an additional $25. I put mine in a Z-palette by attaching a small magnetic to the bottom of the pan. It’s an interesting mix of shades if you like your beige and greens together, but I didn’t end up loving the way the colors worked together, partially because the warmer green shade doesn’t look as intense on the lid as it does swatched or in the pan, so it loses contrast on the lid.

Stardust #1 is a soft, muted beige with very subtle warm undertones and a frosted finish. The texture was very soft and blendable, though a little powdery initially. It had good color payoff and was easy to use. It wore well for eight hours. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Stardust #2 is a medium-dark, warm-toned olive green with a soft, frosted finish. It had really nice pigmentation, and the texture was soft–almost creamy–and effortless to blend. The only thing I noticed was that it seemed to apply slightly more mutedly than it swatched. On the lid, the color stayed on well for eight hours before fading. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Stardust #3 is a muted, medium brown with subtle, warm, yellow-ish undertones and a lightly frosted finish–almost a combination of frost and satin to me, because there is very fine shimmer to it. It might be harder to tell against my skin tone, but it did have good pigmentation that was mostly opaque. The texture was a little powdery, though it was incredibly easy to blend on the lid without losing intensity. It lasted well for eight hours. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Stardust #4 is a dark, dirty green with subtle, warm olive undertones and a golden-green metallic sheen. It had nice color payoff, and the texture was very smooth and finely-milled, but there was a slight dryness to it. The color showed signs of fading after eight hours of wear. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Cle de Peau Silver Eclipse (306) Eye Color Quad Review, Photos, Swatches

Cle de Peau Silver Eclipse (306) Eye Color Quad
Cle de Peau Silver Eclipse (306) Eye Color Quad

Cle de Peau Silver Eclipse (306) Eye Color Quad ($55.00 for 0.21 oz.) is a set of peach, plum, silver, and black. It reminded me of New Year’s Eve for some reason (maybe it’s the mixture of black and silver with an overall metallic sheen). I think the colors work really well together, but I wasn’t as impressed with the pigmentation or the texture of two of the shades. At this price point, I would expect perfection, particularly with respect to being soft, smooth, and blendable. It did apply better than I think it swatched, which was a nice surprise, but it could have been better. (Note, the price is for just the pan of four shades, if you want the official compact to house them, that will run you an additional $25. I keep all of mine in a Z-palette.)

Silver Eclipse #1 is a brightened, pink-peach with a metallic sheen. It had semi-opaque color payoff that was buildable to fully opaque color with two layers. The texture was soft, finely-milled, and easily blended on the skin. It wore well for eight hours on me before fading. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Silver Eclipse #2 is a muted, plummy mauve with very subtle warm undertones and a frost finish. It had very nice pigmentation with a silky-smooth consistency that was a cinch to work with. The color didn’t start to fade until after eight hours of wear. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Silver Eclipse #3 is a light-medium, silvery gray with chunky silver sparkle. The consistency was more crumbly–too soft in a way–and had a chunkiness to it that made it hard to apply evenly. It didn’t stick well to the skin, and even patted on top of primer, it wasn’t great (I think it needs a tackier base so it adheres better). I had a fair amount of fall out during application, but there was only minor fall out after that. It lasted for almost eight hours. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Silver Eclipse #4 is a dark black with subtle, warm undertones and a pearly sheen. It had so-so color payoff and was drier in consistency, which made it more difficult to blend out–and blendability is so important when you have deeper shades like this! It wore well for seven and a half hours on me. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

When it comes to highlighters that illuminate and add a glowing sheen to the skin without emphasizing pores, I’m obsessed. Every year, there are so many fabulous limited edition highlighters that get released, but thankfully, there are also some excellent permanent options that I never tire of. Here are some of my favorites!

  1. Cle de Peau Delicate Pink — a soft, shimmering pink-beige
  2. Burberry Nude Radiance No. 01 — a sheer, liquid luminizer
  3. Kevyn Aucoin Candlelight — a warm, golden beige sheen
  4. Becca Moonstone — a shimmery, golden champagne

Cle de Peau Marmalade Sky (301) Eyeshadow Quad Review, Photos, Swatches

Cle de Peau Marmalade Sky (301) Eye Color Quad
Cle de Peau Marmalade Sky (301) Eye Color Quad

Cle de Peau Marmalade Sky (301) Eye Color Quad ($55.00 for 0.21 oz.) is a set of lighter, warm-toned neutrals. It’s just a so-so palette, and the colors are fairly dupable that it’s not one I’d splurge on, as I think there are better options for warm-toned neutral palettes (or quads) out there these days.

Also, keep in mind that the price is for the refill only; the case is sold separately ($25). I keep mine in Z-Palettes with a magnetic strip on the back, which has worked just fine for me! Another way to do it is to purchase one case for traveling with a particular quad but not a case for each and every one you may have.

Marmalade Sky #1 is a light pink with warm undertones and a soft, pearly sheen. It had semi-opaque color coverage with a soft, silky-smooth texture that was easy to work with and lasted for eight hours. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Marmalade Sky #2 is a sparkling, warm beige with a hint of peach and gold micro-sparkle over a more metallic finish. It had good pigmentation with a silky, blendable consistency that wore well for eight hours, but there was a little fall out over time. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Marmalade Sky #3 is a bright, neutral white with a frosted finish. It had good color payoff with a finely-milled, silky texture that applied well. The color wore for eight hours before fading. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Marmalade Sky #4 is a softened, medium copper brown with copper sparkle and a gold frosted sheen. It had decent pigmentation, but the texture was drier and a little powdery. The sparkle felt disconnected to the base color, so there was fall out during application as well as during wear. There are too many shades in the industry just like this to have this be anything less than excellent. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Cle de Peau Baby Universe (303) Eye Color Quad
Cle de Peau Baby Universe (303) Eye Color Quad

Cle de Peau Baby Universe (303) Eye Color Quad ($55.00 for 0.21 oz.) is a more mid-tone set of warm-toned neutrals that’s also a bit less frosted than some of the quads in the range. The major upside to the Cle de Peau formula is how blendable and silky in feel it is, which makes it easy to apply to the lid, and the formula adheres well to the skin without a primer. I liked this quad, but it’s certainly dupable as there are so many neutral quads and palettes to choose from these days.

Baby Universe #1 is a muted, medium-dark brown with warm undertones and a satin finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation with a really silky, soft powder consistency, but it was a little powdery to work with. It lasted for seven and a half hours on me. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Baby Universe #2 is a light-medium, peach with warm undertones and a frosted finish. It had good color coverage paired with a soft, silky texture that applied well and sat beautifully on the skin. The shade stayed on well for eight hours. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Baby Universe #3 is a muted, medium-dark purpled taupe with warm undertones and a satin sheen. It had so-so pigmentation with a soft, blendable texture that was a smidgen powdery. It lasted for eight hours before fading. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Baby Universe #4 is a muted, medium-dark brown with warm, reddish undertones and a frosted finish. It had excellent pigmentation with a really smooth, buttery texture that was so easy to work with. It wore well for eight and a half hours before creasing slightly. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Cle de Peau Champagne Supernova (304) Eye Color Quad
Cle de Peau Champagne Supernova (304) Eye Color Quad

Cle de Peau Champagne Supernova (304) Eye Color Quad ($55.00 for 0.21 oz.) is an interesting mix of lighter, spring-y shades that aren’t quite pastel, but they’re not brights either. This quad seemed very shimmery, almost metallic, at times, and I would have loved to see one darker, more contrasting shade instead of one of the lighter shades (perhaps the gold). I had minor, but noticeable, fall out with two of the four shades, which was disappointing. I think a primer would help kick this one up a notch more so than some of the other variations I’ve tried.

Champagne Supernova #1 is a light-medium, yellowed gold with a frosted, lightly metallic, finish. It had fairly good color payoff that was blendable and adhered well to the skin. It could have been just slightly smoother all in all. It wore well for eight hours but had a little bit of fall out. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Champagne Supernova #2 is a light-medium, neutral-to-warm-toned purple with a soft, golden frosted shimmer. It had nice pigmentation (though not fully opaque) with a soft, blendable consistency that was easy to work with. The color started to fade after eight hours of wear. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Champagne Supernova #3 is a light-medium, taupe brown with warm, golden metallic sheen and fine golden bronze sparkle. The texture was soft but on the looser side and felt almost dry. It had good pigmentation, but I wish it was smoother. It lasted for eight hours on me but had a bit of fall out. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Champagne Supernova #4 is a light-medium, chartreuse green with warm undertones and a pearly sheen. It’s a more subdued take on chartreuse, so it can be easier to wear if you’re not used to brighter shades. The texture was soft and silky, while it had good color payoff. It started to fade after eight hours of wear. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Cle de Peau Satin Moon (305) Eyeshadow Quad Review, Photos, Swatches

Cle de Peau Satin Moon (305) Eye Color Quad
Cle de Peau Satin Moon (305) Eye Color Quad

Cle de Peau Satin Moon (305) Eye Color Quad ($55.00 for 0.21 oz.) is a smokier, medium to dark set of neutral shades, which still leans warm-toned, though it isn’t as overtly warm-toned as a few of the other quads. Unfortunately, this quad had one of the more disappointing eyeshadows that I’ve tried from the entire quad range, as it was drier, a little powdery, and harder to blend on the skin. The color combination comes together particularly well, and there’s enough contrast to create a few layered, neutral looks with a smoky edge, so it’s a shame that it didn’t perform better.

Satin Moon #1 is a light-medium, golden brown with a soft, frosted finish and warm undertones. It had nice color payoff with a soft, silky texture that was blendable and applied evenly to bare skin. It didn’t fade until after I wore it for eight hours. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Satin Moon #2 is a medium-dark bronzy brown with warm, reddish undertones and gold shimmer and micro-sparkle. The texture was soft but a smidgen powdery, though it applied well and blended nicely. The color stayed on the lid for eight and a half hours with a little bit of fall out from the sparkle. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Satin Moon #3 is a muted, medium-dark brown with a very, very subtle hint of gray with its bronzy, frosted finish. It had nice pigmentation with a soft, blendable consistency that was easy to work with. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Satin Moon #4 is a deepened grayish taupe with cool undertones and a satin sheen. It had so-so color payoff, but the real issue was the texture: dry, powdery, and difficult to blend. It was the type of texture that stuck where it initially applied but was hard to diffuse or blend out the edges–it needs a primer or base color to adhere to help minimize that. The color started to fade after eight and a half hours of wear. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Round-up: Cle de Peau Eye Color Quads Overview & Thoughts

$

It only took a year, but I finally reviewed all of the Cle de Peau Eye Color Quads in the permanent range. After receiving two as press samples, I loved the texture of the formula so much that I bought the other six, which I wouldn’t repeat again. I still really like the texture, generally, across all of the quads, but the colors are more dupable in far too many of the quads, and there are a lot more neutrals that run together across the variations that inspire me less after trying. They’re also just not as impressive relative to their price point (which doesn’t leave a lot of room for error).  The ones I reach for most are Stardust (302) (A-) and Stellar Gaze (307) (A-).
